Sebadoh – Secret EP
Sebadoh released the Secret EP completely unannounced and with very little fanfare. Although just five songs, it’s their first release since the criminally dismissed The Sebadoh all the way back in 1999. Seriously. Listen to it now. You were wrong, it’s fantastic.
Considering they’ve had at least three reunion tours in the current century, it’s surprising Lou Barlow, Jason Lowenstein, and Bob D’amico waited this long to put something out. Meant as a teaser for the forthcoming album due out in 2013 (none of the songs on the EP will be included on the full length), Secret EP is closer in sound to Harmacy and Bakesale than The Freed Weed, which makes sense since this is the same line up. The opener, “Keep the Boy Alive,” combines the twee sound of the early albums with the more rockin’ modern albums. “My Drugs” is the standard Jason Lowenstein rocker, complete with odd and unexpected chords. It’s not all just a nostalgia show, as another Lowenstein track, “I Don’t Mind,” is almost a mellow country/surf tune. “All Kinds” closes out the EP, and is the closest to a true Sebadoh classic, and not just because it’s a minute and a half long.
The only way to get your hands on the Secret EP is on the band’s Bandcamp or by buying a physical copy at one of their shows. While you’re at it, check out their website , watch a “video” for “Keep the Boy Alive,” and check out their current tour dates below.
